Jersey Environment Awards - Conditions of entry

 


This Awards Scheme ("the Scheme") is promoted and organised by the Trustees of the Gerard Le Claire Environmental Trust ("the Trust"), a Jersey charitable trust.  The purpose of the Scheme is to recognise and encourage outstanding contributions from individuals and organisations to the conservation and enhancement of Jersey's environment.

 

Awards will be made within four categories:

Environmentalist of the Year (Gerard Le Claire Trophy)

Awarded to the individual who, in the opinion of the Trustees, has, during the past year, through personal commitment and application made the most outstanding contribution to the protection or enhancement of Jersey's environment.

Environmental Business Award

Awarded to the business organisation that, in the opinion of the Trustees, has, during the past year, demonstrated the greatest commitment to environmental best practice.  Particular focus will be given to environmental strategy embedded into the company's business practices.

Environmental Non-Profit Organisation Award

Awarded to the public, voluntary or other non-profit making organisation that in the opinion of the Trustees has, during the past year, demonstrated the greatest commitment to achieving high environmental standards.

Young Environmentalist Award

Awarded to the individual (under 21 years of age) who, in the opinion of the Trustees, has during the past year demonstrated the greatest passion and enthusiasm for Jersey's environment.

 

Entrants for the Scheme must submit a written application in the format prescribed by the Trust. The closing date for submissions is 31st October 2005.

 

Entrants may be nominated by third parties but only with their permission.  Either the person or organisation making the nomination, or the nominee, must submit an application in the prescribed  format.

 

To be eligible for an award, entrants must (in the case of organisations) be based in Jersey at the time of submitting their applications or (in the case of individuals) be or have been ordinarily resident in Jersey during at least six of the past twelve months. (Entrants attending educational or other courses or conducting research outside Jersey, or on temporary secondment to non-Jersey institutions, but whose normal residence is in Jersey, will not be disqualified).

 

Entries will be judged by a committee of the Trustees of the Trust and other invited judges.  Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

 

All entrants

  • Quality of submission / application
  • Degree of originality / innovation
  • Evidence of substantive / measurable impact and/or other benefit

Organisations only

  • Demonstrable programme for promotion or dissemination of work
  • Involvement of relevant stakeholders (e.g. employees)
  • Conformity to continuous improvement best practice and to the principles of sustainability.

In making their deliberations, the judges reserve the right to request further information from entrants and if necessary by prior arrangement to interview them and / or visit relevant locations to assist them in reaching a decision.  Entrants undertake so far as reasonably possible to provide such information and to facilitate such meetings and site visits, and accept  that any failure to do so may prejudice their entry.

 

The judges reserve the right not to make an award in any category if in their opinion none of the criteria and standards required.

 

Current and former Trustees and their immediate families are not eligible to enter the awards scheme.

 

The decision of the judges in making the awards will be final.

 

The names of award winners will be announced shortly after the judging is  completed. The judges reserve the right to announce also the names of the runners-up in each category.

 

Awards will be presented to the winner in each category and will be held for a period of two years.  The award will, at all times remain the property of the Trust. Award winners will undertake to keep the awards safe and in good condition and to return them to the Trust at the latest one month before the second anniversary of the date of the award.

 

Winning entrants and runners-up agree that their names and details of their entries may be divulged by the Trust to the media and other parties as part of its promotional activities.

 

The Trustees reserves the right to vary these terms and conditions at their discretion;
